Exhaust air purification

The evoran® FOX technology for the removal of pollutants and odours

Common contaminants in gas streams include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odours, inorganic substances and microorganisms. Exhaust air streams often contain a mixture of several of these components, which must be filtered out of the air using a suitable exhaust air purification system.

The exhaust air from wastewater treatment plants and sewage sludge tanks may contain, for example, hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), alcohols, organic acids and bacteria.

Complex mixtures of odorous substances are produced during many biochemical and technical processes, such as fermentation, roasting or decomposition. In the manufacture and processing of varnishes, paints and coating materials in paint shops or in the automotive industry, a wide variety of organic solvents are used; these enter the air cycle via extraction systems and pose a risk to human health and the environment. The need for comprehensive exhaust air treatment is obvious and is stipulated in the TA Luft (Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control) as well as in national and international laws and regulations.

By combining various purification processes, evoran Umwelttechnologie GmbH offers exhaust air purification solutions designed to clean exhaust air streams containing complex mixtures of pollutants in an energy-efficient and reliable manner.

With evoran’s FOX technology, air pollutants are converted into harmless and odourless air constituents, such as water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), through UV irradiation and the process of photo-oxidation.

Depending on the type and concentration of the pollutants, evoran offers a wide range of exhaust air purification processes:

  • Concentration using an adsorption wheel
  • Photo-oxidation using UV-C light
  • Catalytic oxidation
  • Adsorption on activated carbon filters
  • Scrubber

Disinfection during exhaust air purification – taking on bacteria

Air disinfection has long been one of the standard applications of photo-oxidation technology. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, pneumococci or streptococci are inactivated by irradiation with UVC light at 254 nm. During this process of exhaust air purification, the DNA, proteins and other cellular components are irreversibly damaged, so that the microorganisms can no longer reproduce and die off. This method of exhaust air purification for industrial applications prevents the dreaded exponential growth of microorganisms. In addition to bacteria, viruses, fungal spores, plankton and other micro-organisms in the air are reliably killed, and the exhaust air stream is disinfected.
